McCain strategy not hitting home with voters, polls suggest

McCain's Joe the Plummer strategy at the debate didn't seem to hit with voters at home. Research showed that only 80% of Missouri voters had even heard of Joe the plumber. Only 8% said they would vote for McCain because of this and 3% for Obama. While the rest were not affected by his story. McCain needs to look for a new strategy to gain voters because as time goes on, more and more people are unaffected by McCain's attacks on Obama. Studies show that not many people care about Obama's relationship with Ayers. It seems unimportant because Obama was so young at the time. I think it is time for McCain to stop campaigning against Obama and start campaigning for himself. He needs to find a new strategy for gaining support while playing a fair race. What should McCain's new strategy be?

I completely agree with Doug on the analysis that McCain's attacks on Obama appear to be falling largely on deaf ears. Doug is also right that McCain has definitely focused more time on explaining why Obama shouldn't be president than why McCain should instead occupy this office.
I believe that McCain should alter his strategy to instead concentrate on touting McCain's record on being a "maverick" within his own party, as well as his anti-government spending and ant-taxation views. Obama's campaign has been working hard to convince voters that McCain and George W. Bush are the same person, and for some reason McCain hasn't mentioned the fact that he voted AGAINST Bush on several issues (HMO reform, climate change, gun legislation, tax policy, etc.). In a time in which there is so much animosity towards Bush by the American public, it doesn't make sense that the McCain campaign hasn't brought up these specific incidents in which he drew the ire of the Bush administration and the Republican Party as a whole.
Also, one subject that every single decent American citizen can relate to is the issue of taxation. McCain should be trying to further emphasize his record on lowering taxes and fighting wasteful federal spending of taxpayer money.
